Meet Mirella
Mirella Ten Have is a certified esthetician who was born and raised in beautiful Thunder Bay, Ontario, which she still happily calls home. Mirella has been serving her community for more than 30 years by giving soul-filling, results-oriented skin treatments, electrolysis and spa services. Mirella’s nurturing energy and compassionate perspective on self-worth and belonging make her a well-loved esthetician in Thunder Bay and the surrounding area.
Why I Do What I Do
When people ask me why I do what I do, it always takes me back to my childhood.
Growing up, I had no confidence, never felt comfortable in my own skin, and never felt worthy of success. I wanted to do something unique, do something I felt that only I could do — but it was a long road to getting there.
I had high expectations of myself, struggled to accept compliments, and shied away from attention. I let my fear of looking or sounding stupid hold me back. It was only when my high school counselor told me that I would never make something of myself that I gathered the determination to prove him — and myself — wrong.
Over the years, I’ve developed the ability to sense when a client is feeling uneasy or self-conscious. Having had a boss during my first esthetician role who never took the time to make clients feel comfortable, I now cater each and every session to getting to know my client’s individual goals to ensure that the treatment takes them one more step towards meeting those goals.
I originally chose a career in esthetics as a way to confront my own roadblocks to a healthy self-esteem.
My thought process was, “If I can’t feel good about myself, then I’ll pour everything I have into making other people look and feel like their most beautiful self.” However, as my career progressed I realized just how important empathy is in this industry, and that building trust is just as beneficial as customized skin care or quality makeup. To me, it’s essential that — for the hour they’re with me — my clients feel like they are the most important person in the world. Making clients feel respected and genuinely listened to, whether they’re a drop-in or a long-time customer, is one of my key ingredients to delivering great esthetic work every time.
As for my own self-esteem? While it’s been an uphill battle, I’ve learned to embrace my talents, successes, and strengths — both in looks and personality — through helping others to love themselves. And I have all of my fantastic clients to thank for it.
